Yuletide As An Epic Saga
There is always a time when our fate may seem desperate and the chance of
success appears hopeless. The Asa gods and goddesses thought they were lost
when the god of light Balder was ignorantly killed by his blind brother Hoder.
However, the struggle goes on until a time when it appears light is lost to the
gods and men of the realms. This is the time of the reunification of Balder and
Hoder. A reformation and rebirth of the new god of Wotan in the renewing year
is a continuing cycle.
The case of the men and gods at the time
of Yule is an epic saga that is continually borrowed from and repeated in great
works of music and film. One such story is told in the third of a three-volume
conflict which is titled ‘Return of the King’. To slightly paraphrase Aragorn
at the Black Gate of Mordor in this film:
“Hold your ground. Hold your ground.
Friends of the Celts, of Walloons, of Slavs my brothers… I see in your eyes the
same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of
men fails, when we forsake our bonds and we forsake all fellowship. An hour of
wolves and shattered shields when the Age of Men comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This
day we fight! By all that is good on this good earth I bid you stand.
Stand, men of the West!
