BALDER

Balder is the Nordic God who is the son of the chief god Odin and his wife Frigg.  Odin appointed him King of Westphalia, Germany and his dwelling is at Breidablik.  He is also known as Fal.  Balder is the most influential peacemaker.  Balder fell in love with the goddess Nanna after seeing her bathing. Balder’s wife Fulla stands by him.  Balder is attacked by a rain of weapons which do not harm him. The gods exacted an oath from all things to not harm Balder except mistletoe.  Balder was banished to Hel by Hoder, his blind brother, who used mistletoe to kill him on the advice of Loke.

Balder is the first Asa to dwell in the lower world.  Odin asked the vala about decorations and she answered “Here  stands for Balder mead prepared, pure drink; shields are overspread, and asmegir are waiting impatiently.”  A splendidly adorned hall in the lower world awaits Balder’s arrival.  The pure and pious Asa-god comes to Hel.

Odin’s dwellings survive Ragnarok and are inhabited by Balder and Hoder.  The world tree shall grow green again; evil shall cease, and Balder shall come back.
